Wilkes Test Scores Good, Mostly

By and large, the news from the state concerning Wilkes Coynty Schools' performance in relation to the state's accountability program are good. The state Board of Education released scores last in its testing program known as the ABCs of Public Education.
Eighteen of 22 schools in the Wilkes County system achieved "high-growth" status in the annual tests.Two schools in Wilkes received an “Expected Growth” designation in the results. They were East Wilkes High and Moravian Falls Elementary schools. West Wilkes High School received no recognition in the ABC program this year.
“They met their growth standard in terms of academic achievement at West Wilkes,” Associate Superintendent Kaye Lamb told the Journal-Patriot. “But they did not meet their graduation-rate standard, and that’s a factor in the high school results.” The dropout rate at West Wilkes increased in the 2006-07 school year over the previous academic period. The Career and Technical Education Magnet School tested fewer than the required 95 percent of students and did not receive a score.
