Goss: Worth Wilkesboro Recevies Rural Center Grant for Reddies Dredging

The Town of North Wilkesboro will receive a grant of nearly $260,000 from the N.C. Rural Development Center to fund dredgning sediment out of the Reddies River impoundment lake. Town Commissioners asked the Rural Center earlier this month to place their grant request on a fast track because of worsening drought conditions. "This project is critical to helping the town continue to provide water for its residents during the extended drought,” said N.C. Sen. Steve Goss, who helped seek the grant for the town, in a news release.
The sediment has largely clogged North Wilkesboro’s raw-water intake there, slowing access to the town’s drinking-water supply.
“Dredging will have a favorable impact on the quality of water coming into the water treatment plant, according to Town Manager Hank Perkins. “It will also help our ability to store the water in the impoundment.”
The Journal-Patriot reports North Wilkesboro is also seeking grant funds to build its share of a larger water intake from the W. Kerr Scott Dam and Reservoir on the Yadkin River.The project is part of a five-year program to connect intakes for North Wilkesboro and Wilkesboro at the reservoir.­
