Two Wilkes residents reported identity theft cases over the weekend. Sally Miller tells deputies she was contacted by the fraud department for her credit card concerning some purchases that had been attempted on the card. According to Miller, there were purchases totaling 468-dollars that were approved by the card issuer before they realized the fraud was going on. They did not tell her the locations of those sale, but did indicate they had received and declined a number of other transactions from across the nation. She also told deputies she had been informed by the card company that the theft of the card number had happened at the Wilkesboro WalMart -- how they came to know that is not clear. The case was referred to Wilkesboro police for further investigation.

Richard Cardwell tells deputies he was checking his bank account online and came across the unauthorized charges. After contacting his ban's fraud department and the fraud investigators at Alltel, where the purchases were made, he was able to determine someone had used his debit card information to phone in some purchases and to pay an existing cell phone bill for an out-of-town customer of Alltel. According to the crime report, the total loss in the case was 260-dollars and change.

Both cases remain under investigation.
