Teens Stopped, Detained at Drunk Driver Checkpoint

Wilkesboro police impounded a vehicle and cited four teens early Saturday during a checkpoint being conducted as part of the statewide "Booze It and Lose It" effort. According to police, all four tested with some level of alcohol in their bloodstream, and no one in the vehicle was of age to be drinking. They are identified as 17-year old Danielle Nicole Miller, who is from Washington state; 19-year old Nicholas Ryas Bell of North Wilkesboro; 18-year old Elizabeth Ann Crusan of North Wilkesboro; and the driver, 19-year old Justin Ryan Spears of Purlear. After their vehicle was stopped, officers became suspicious because someone had sprayed heavy amounts of perfume in the air just before pulling up to the checkpoint. A drug dog detected a small amount of marijuana in the passenger compartment, resulting in the arrest of Spears on drug charges. Miller was arrested for underage consumption, because her blood alcohol was over the legal limit for an adult. Bell and Cruzan were ticketed and released to their parents.
