Rifle Stolen

Wilkes sheriff deputies are investigating the theft of a bolt-action rifle from a home this week. Phillip Whiting called deputies to his rural North Wilkesboro home early yesterday, after he arrived home from a friend's house and found the rifle missing. It's a Remington 700 SPS with a synthetic stock and a hunting scope, worth about 600-dollars. Whiting tells deputies the rifle was normally kept leaning in a corner of the bedroom. There were no signs that anyone had forced their way into the house, but he could offer no ideas as to who might have had access to steal the rifle. The serial number has been entered in the national crime database in case the gun turns up later. The case remains under investigation.
