Wilkes sheriff deputies are working two break-ins that occurred yesterday. The two crimes do not appear related at this point. The first burglary happened sometime between 7:30 am and 4:30 pm yesterday at a home on Statesville Road owned by Jason and Delilah Gregory. Mr. Gregory arrived home yesterday afternoon to find his side door sitting open. Thinking his wife had left in a hurry, he didn't follow up on it immediately. But while he was in a spare bedroom working out, Gregory says he heard a screen door slam. It turned out he may have heard the burglar leaving through his front door. He believes he knows who the person is, and has given deputies his name. The man had talked with him earlier in the day. Several items were taken including a revolver, jewelry, a jar full of change, and other items. Total value is over 12-hundred dollars. Deputies have not made any arrests.

The second case was reported about the same time, and likely occurred during the day yesterday as well. William McGrew came home to his place on Bethel Road in Jonesville and found someone had broken into an outbuilding and taken his nearly-new John Deere riding mower worth about 25-hundred dollars. He knows it was there yesterday morning. Someone had tried to take the mower last fall, but was stopped by passers-by. That time, the burglar left the mower sitting out by the road when they took off. McGrew did not have a description of the man, or any guesses as to his age, as he had not seen him. That's the only suspect information developed in the case so far.
