Mt. Airy Plane Crash Kills Six

Authorities have spent the weekend on the grim task of sifting through wreckage of the fatal plane crash in Mount Airy. Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board arrived there Saturday, after a small plane carrying six passengers from Georgia to Virginia crashed Friday, killing all six people on board. Officials said their investigation at the scene could take a week. The wreckage fell in a grassy area between two homes, in a neighborhood of at least 40 to 50 homes; however, no one on the ground was injured.
Authorities identified the victims as Hal Echols, who owned the plane; Wesley Rakestraw, Steve Simpson, Robert Butler, Tony Gunter and Frank Ruggiero. The plane, a King Air C90A, was attempting to land at the airport in low fog. The plane originated from Polk County, Ga., and was carrying passengers traveling to Patrick County, Va., for a hunting excursion.
