3WC Going Phishing: Bait & Switch
It’s a case of good news & bad news for computer users, as we explain in today’s segment of Going Phishing. The Google company released a free upgrade on Thursday, which will allow users to transfer information from one computer to another. All a person has to do is download the upgrade and then specify what information they want to be transferred. There is however a catch. In order to do this, Google transfers the information to its’ own storage system before processing it through to the other computer. Once that second computer is switched on, Google will then automatically transfer the requested information and then delete it. The problem comes in those seconds or days in between. Once the information is stored in Google’s system, it will stay there up to 30 days, while waiting for that second computer to be switched on. And while the information will be encrypted, it’s possible that hackers could get in and access it without anyone noticing. For anyone interested in the technology, it can be downloaded by going to http://desktop.google.com Also the software will only work with either Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 or Windows XP.

The reason for the recall is due to a defect in the burner tube. Instead of generating fire out of the end, it ignites inside the burner tube itself. That means any combustible material under or around the heater could go up in flames. 40 separate reports have been received about homes being damaged due to the defect. Anyone who bought one of these heaters can bring them back for a free replacement or a refund. A hotline has also been set up if you have any questions at 1-866-279-3225.
